Learning Today for Swaziland's Tomorrow

Matjana Preschool is a community education hub nestled in the scenic hills of rural Swaziland. The first preschool in the area, Matjana cultivates a passion for learning, discovery and play for the area’s youth.

The preschool was established in 2007 by a group of volunteers without organizational assistance. It employs local women as teachers and is powered by the support of international donors.

“Matjana Preschool has excellent facilities – it’s the kind of preschool I’d expect to find in town,
not in a rural area.”

– Dudu Hlophe, Ministry of Education & Training

Matjana Preschool is located in Ndabeni, Kaphunga, a rural area of Swaziland. The school and most of the surrounding area does not have access to electricity or running water.

Inception

Matjana Preschool opened in 2007, with support from international donors.  The school’s application to be registered with the Swazi Ministry of Education was approved on June 18th 2007 and we have since elected a community committee to govern the school.

Mission

Matjana Preschool primarily aims to provide affordable early childhood education to children in the Ndabeni area of Kaphunga.  In addition it aims to provide employment and skills development opportunities for members of the local community.

Expansion

Matjana Preschool currently enrols 30 five-year-old children each year. We are in the process of building a second classroom so that we can enrol a second class of 30 three and four-year old children. Find out more
