For over eleven years this has never happened in our area. It was the first of it’s kind and it left us all shocked. It was evening around five pm when strong winds started. It blew off the roofing at the kitchen. Threw away all the corrugated irons out of the school premises.

It also cut off the electricity cable which was from the pole to the classroom. We were left with no electricity. The kids swings were also destroyed on that day and we found them outside the fence. Our mothers have continued cooking outside using a wood fire. But it’s difficult in the wind and the classroom is cluttered with all the food and cooking equipment

We have been promised help from the local government authority to fix the roofing for, but despite some promises over the years, government assistance is something else that has never happened to Matjana in the more that 12 years we’ve been operating our school

OUR FUNNIEST LEARNERS

Most of the time we teachers spend with our learners we observe different characters. Every year there are funny learners who give their teachers and fellow students lots of laughs.

FUNNY SHADOWS

One of the funniest learners this year in loves to play with the sun rays by the door. They laugh when they see their shadow on the floor. “Buka stfombe sam laphansi (look at my image on the floor ),” shouts Nkoskhona laughing. He begins to dance or makes some silly actions while gazing down to his shadow. We also laugh with the other learners watching his silly act.

ALPHABET FUN

Another one of the Matjana kids who is funny to watch is our only our year old boy- most of our kids are already five years old. He often stands up during evaluation period, go to the alphabet chart and sing the a,b,c song without being instructed by the teacher. Also he goes to the numbers chart to ask the learners what number is it. Despite being our youngest, he loves pretending to teach his older class mates. We all laughed our lungs out, and he seems to enjoy knowing that he makes us laugh as well.

FUNNY ABOOUT WILD ANIMALS

This terms we’ve been learning about animals and some kids get a little excited about wild animals while others are confused about their habits and even scares. One of our four year olds is really scared of dangerous wild animals he has never seen, after hearing from his teachers that the lion, king of the jungle can do harm to humans. He sat looking up to the roof as the teacher spoke about lions, then whispered to his friends that he does not even want even to see that animal for the rest of his life. Later, when the teacher was asking the kids to remind their parents to pay for a trip to observe all the animals in the game reserves around the country he  began to shake his head. “I can’t go for a trip,” he complained and his face was full of fear. “What if the lion can eat me? “ he asked .“I cannot run fast.”

FUNNY ABOUT DOLLS

Kids use dolls for playing and make believing and we have all sorts of dolls, including people and animal shaped dolls. Two fo our students this year are a brother and sister and both are talented at making the sounds of the different animal dolls we have. Some animals we are familiar too such as chicken, goats, dogs and cattle. Other animals we don’t really know what they sound like so they make up the sounds as they go. They love singing the song Old MacDonald had a farm  and counting all animals and making its sound.  And they often make us laugh with the funny sounds they come up with.
